Module 3 - Meridian and Point Theory

The third module looks at meridian and point theory. Here students will study the nature and location of meridian points which correspond with the 12 organ meridians, the 8 congenital meridians and extra points. The students will learn how to locate each point and safely palpate, massage and needle it. Contraindications and risks of each point will be covered as well as the safe application of the points in a therapeutic setting.

Classroom Session 1

  • Introduction to the theory of meridian points
  • Contraindications and safety issues of acupuncture
  • How to hold and handle the needle including safe disposal
  • Meridian point location of the Lung and Large Intestine meridians
  • Meridian point location of the Spleen and Stomach meridians

Classroom Session 2

  • Meridian point location of the Heart and Small Intestine meridians
  • Meridian point location of the Kidney and Bladder meridians
  • Meridian point location of the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians
  • Meridian point location of the Pericardium and San Jiao meridians
  • Introduction to needle insertion

Classroom Session 3

  • Meridian point location of the Du and Ren meridians
  • Meridian point location of extra points
  • Needle manipulation
  • Stimulating the needle in the correct manner
  • Understanding the depth of needle insertion
  • Needling the Jing Jin (fascia lines) as opposed to the meridians
  • Sensitivity to and accessing the meridians
  • Sensitive points
  • Transmission of Qi and breath into the needle

Classroom Session 4

  • Understanding the functions of points according to classification
  • The antique points of the Nan Jing
  • Shifting Qi flow between meridians
  • Nourishing and reducing various points
  • Needle insertion according to classical principles
  • Combining points
  • Accessing the congenital energy body

Classroom Session 5

  • Microsystems of the body (hand, foot and ear)
  • Advanced needle techniques
  • The energetics of needle usage

Classroom Session 6

  • Spiritual usage of points
  • Classical theory of possession treatments
  • Advanced usage of needle combinations
  • Revision of entire module
